At least 72 have been killed in separate bomb attacks on popular pet markets in Baghdad, the deadliest bombings in Iraq since the US troops surge in the spring.

A female suicide bomber killed up to 45 people and wounded 78 at the central al-Ghazl pet market at about 10.20am.

A second bomb exploded 20 minutes later at a bird market in the southern part of the capital, killing at least 27 people and wounding 67, Reuters news agency said.

Police blamed either a second female suicide bomber or a roadside explosive device.
